Dead Code

Sound of a gong. And then something that sounds like ... rain? No, it's more like white noise. Ah, right, I'm at a sound bath. Floating in a suspended hammock. It felt so cozy and comforting that my mind went who knows where, but now it's back, briefly. The room smells nice. Lavender and wood. I don't want to get up. I really needed this, it's been an intense day.

I'm leaving my job after 10 years, and today I had to talk to my manager about how these last 2 weeks should look. Such a contrived and meaningless conversation. Lately, most of them have been like this. Part of the reason why I'm leaving. One of the other reasons being that nagging feeling that I should be doing something else with my life after so many years here.

Dead code. He keeps talking about how our team should be deleting more dead code. Because we don't want AI to learn from code that we don't use. Because that would slow down the process of AI replacing us. The challenge is that we sometimes don't know if the code is really dead. I joined our meeting over the phone. Instead of being in the office, I'm using the time to take my car for a wash. Another reason for leaving - I started slacking at work. And that's not who I want to be. Manager looks through the office window. He sees a fox in the park. There are a lot of foxes in London, I always thought that was cute and special, somehow unique among the European capitals. He says the fox is not moving. He thinks it's dead. Saddest part of my day. Ah, no, wait, it was just sleeping, says he. He thought the creature was dead, and in fact it wasn't. He fails to see the analogy. Maybe because dead code is overrated? Unlike the foxes.

Two more weeks. Maybe I should get my teeth checked while I still have the insurance? Oh, shit, I didn't think about the insurance. I wonder what are all the other things that I didn't think through when I decided to quit. I guess I'll find out along the way. There is no book on "How to properly quit a big tech corporation and rediscover your identity", yet. Maybe I should write one. But first I want to get better at writing. And exposing myself. That's the main reason why I started writing this journal. I'd love for people to read it. But that's not the main goal. But first, I want to sign up for a massage course. But first, I want to improve my VO2max. And get comfortable riding a bike in London. I never fully embraced the streets here. Unlike the foxes.
